Common Ultrasound FAQs

Did You Know?

An ultrasound is the most reliable way to confirm that a pregnancy is progressing. Research shows that up to 25% of pregnancies don’t continue, and some miscarriages aren’t noticed until they’re seen on an ultrasound. If a miscarriage is found, it’s important to get medical follow-up.

  • Because there’s a high demand for no-cost ultrasounds in Newberry, we ask that clients first confirm their pregnancy with a positive test. We provide pregnancy tests and can usually schedule your ultrasound the same day.

  • If you’re considering abortion, your first step is a pre-termination appointment that includes an ultrasound.

Before scheduling an abortion, an ultrasound helps determine:

Whether your pregnancy is progressing. This is key to knowing which type of abortion you may be eligible for. The method and cost can vary based on your health history and how far along you are.

Whether your pregnancy is viable. An ultrasound is the only way to confirm if your pregnancy is developing. Research shows that about 1 in 4 pregnancies don’t continue. Some women aren’t aware they’ve miscarried until it’s seen on an ultrasound. If that happens, a doctor will need to provide follow-up care.

  • Limited ultrasounds often do the following:

    • Detect a fetal heartbeat

    • Estimate your due date

    • Show how many fetuses are present

    • Recommend immediate medical care if needed

    Limited ultrasounds do not:

    • Reveal the baby’s sex

    • Diagnose fetal abnormalities

    • Replace prenatal care

  • We provide referrals for no-cost ultrasounds to confirm if your pregnancy is viable and to check how far along you are. As a community-funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we don’t profit from your ultrasound or any decision you make. Because our services are free of charge, nothing is billed to your insurance or added to your medical records.

Your ultrasound results are completely confidential. We're here to support you in a safe, private setting as you explore your options.

If you’re having symptoms like bleeding, spotting, or cramping, get medical help right away. These could be signs of a miscarriage and may require follow-up care.
