When Can I Use the Abortion Pill?

A medical abortion—commonly called the abortion pill—is typically used during the early weeks of pregnancy. The FDA has approved its use for up to 70 days (10 weeks) after the first day of your last period.

As pregnancy progresses, the effectiveness of the abortion pill drops significantly. That’s why it’s crucial to confirm how far along you are, ideally with an ultrasound. This gives a more accurate picture than a urine or even blood test and helps determine which options are still available to you.

What Kinds of Abortion Pills Are Available to Me?

Not all abortion pills are created equal. There are FDA-approved medications—like mifepristone and misoprostol—and then there are non-regulated pills often sold online from international sources.

  • FDA-approved pills are prescribed by certified providers and are generally more expensive.

  • Non-approved pills may be cheaper but usually take longer to ship and aren’t regulated for safety. Many come from countries like India, where medical standards differ from those in the U.S.

Buying pills online may seem like a private and fast option, but it comes with medical and legal risks, especially in states like South Carolina.

Can I Use the Abortion Pill in South Carolina?

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion laws are now decided at the state level. In South Carolina, abortion is currently banned after approximately six weeks of pregnancy, with some exceptions.³

This includes medical abortions, such as using abortion pills. If you are more than six weeks along, using the abortion pill would not be legal under state law—unless your situation qualifies under the legal exceptions (e.g., risk to the mother’s life, rape, or incest within certain time frames).

Important:

  • Treatment for ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages is still legal.

  • Women cannot be prosecuted for seeking or obtaining an abortion.

Even though some websites still offer to ship abortion pills to South Carolina, they cannot provide FDA-approved medication, and purchasing or using these drugs outside medical supervision may carry both legal and health risks.
